This article analyses the significance of discussion forums on the Moodle platform for developing the cognitive abilities of students training to become teachers of foreign languages and foreign literature. It identifies the sources, stages, phases, patterns, and structure of problem-based discussions in the educational process with the aim of expanding the digital educational environment. A methodology is proposed for using the digital platform to conduct and assess problem-based discussions by combining traditional teaching methods with the capabilities of the digital educational environment. The specific features of online forums are identified, and the modes of students’ discussion behavior are classified. Active and passive communication differ in terms of the level of activity in the discussion, attention to previous posts, reactions to them, argumentation, and the ability to defend one’s position. Problematic discussions are classified according to the principle of different sources of problematicity: subjective-personal uncertainty, intellectual difficulty, and cognitive-content contradiction. The discussion topics for the forums have been formulated based on the content of the future teachers’ elective module ‘Intercultural Communication: Oral and Written Aspects’. The proposed methodology for using the digital platform is implemented through organizational, practical, and monitoring stages and is aimed at fostering interactive discussion behavior and developing cognitive and communication competencies. As part of the study, a comparative analysis of philology students' discussion activity at Poltava National Pedagogical University was conducted to determine the feasibility of using digital platforms, particularly discussion forums. The results confirmed the feasibility of implementing a methodology for using digital platforms to conduct discussion forums within the professional training system for future teachers.
