Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the origins, evolution, and cultural significance of chess in world history. It traces the development of the game from its early forms in ancient civilizations of the East to the establishment of classical rules in medieval Europe and its subsequent global spread. The function of chess as a universal language of intercultural communication is identified, facilitating dialogue between people regardless of their cultural differences. The paper explores the transformation of chess from a privileged intellectual practice – the ‘royal game’ at the courts – into an accessible and popular form of leisure, sport, and intellectual development. Particular attention is paid to the institutionalization of chess as a competitive activity, specifically to the establishment of the tradition of matches for the world championship title and the formation of an unbroken line of world champions. The impact of the computerization of chess is analyzed, from the emergence of the first chess programs to the development of modern artificial intelligence systems, which have significantly transformed the theory and practice of the game. The role of chess in the development of logical thinking and cognitive skills is examined. The history of research into the use of chess for educational purposes is studied, and the evolution of scientific approaches is demonstrated, ranging from the analysis of chess players’ thinking to the consideration of chess as an effective means of developing schoolchildren’s intellectual abilities and learning competencies. At the same time, it is indicated that its effectiveness is not automatic and requires systematic integration into the educational process. Examining chess across various historical and functional dimensions has allowed us to trace its continuity as a cultural phenomenon over the centuries. The results obtained highlight the interdisciplinary nature of research into chess as a subject of the humanities. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that chess is a multidimensional cultural phenomenon that combines intellectual activity, social interaction, and educational potential.
