PREREQUISITES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTEGRATIVE ELECTIVE COURSE "HISTORY OF UKRAINE IN ENGLISH": RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF THE 1ST YEAR STUDENTS

The article is devoted to the problem of determining the prerequisites of the integrative elective course "History of Ukraine in English." The survey of 1st-year students in higher education institutions (in which 269 people participated) is described and analyzed. The results of the national multi-subject test (MST) in 2023 concerning two optional subjects, namely "History of Ukraine" and "Foreign language," indicate a higher level of achievement in a foreign language (English) compared to the results in the History of Ukraine. One effective means of improving the school leavers' level of achievement in completing the unit "History of Ukraine" is the integration of the mentioned subjects in high school. School-leavers' difficulties while sitting the 2023 MST "History of Ukraine" are characterized. The most difficult questions to master during preparation for the MST "History of Ukraine" were analyzed. It is indicated that the most challenging aspects are related to the culture of Ukraine in different periods of its development: the visual recognition of cultural heritage, the activities of outstanding personalities in education, science, literature, arts, architecture, etc. It is noted that the integrative elective course "History of Ukraine in English" could help in preparing for MST "History of Ukraine" and "Foreign Language." It is recommended that the elective course "History of Ukraine in English" be designed to focus on general and subject vocabulary and grammatical features of historical texts. The elective course will help students improve their knowledge of foreign languages, communication skills, and subject-historical competencies.
