GAME COMPETENCE IN THE STRUCTURE OF PROFESSIONAL READINESS OF FUTURE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY

The article presents the results of a study examining the relationship between the level of game competence in future physical education teachers and indicators of their professional readiness to work within the framework of the New Ukrainian School. The study addresses the lack of empirical evidence regarding the role of game competence in the structure of teacher professional training. The empirical basis of the research consisted of data obtained from students majoring in Secondary Education (Physical Education). The study assessed both the level of game competence and the quality of professional problem-solving in pedagogical tasks. Data were processed using correlation and analysis of variance techniques, as well as effect size estimation. A strong, statistically significant positive relationship between the studied variables was identified (r = 0.72; p < 0.001), indicating a substantial contribution of game competence to the development of professional readiness in future teachers. Further analysis confirmed the stability of this relationship across different stages of study. A steady increase in both the level of game competence and the quality of professional training from the first to the fourth year was observed, accompanied by medium to large effect sizes. A differentiated contribution of the structural components of game competence was identified: the strongest association with professional readiness was found for the ability to adapt and flexibly apply games, whereas a weaker effect was observed for the component related to explaining rules. The findings allow game competence to be considered a key predictor of professional readiness and substantiate the need to purposefully develop it in the training of future physical education teachers. The practical significance of the study lies in identifying priority directions for modernizing the content of professional education in line with the established relationships.
