The fear of public speaking holds an honorable second place among the most common human fears. This article presents a palette of fears experienced by speakers. It is shown that, in most cases, speakers are not afraid of the speech itself, but rather of public judgment or shame, rejection, incompetence, hostility, loss of face, negative public opinion, questions, and counterarguments. Fear is described as an ambivalent emotion that, on one hand, acts as a powerful energetic catalyst of the speaker’s mental, physical, and spiritual forces, and on the other hand, an emotion that diminishes the ability to respond to danger, act effectively, and interact with the audience.
In contrast to fear, the article considers anxiety as a psycho-emotional state characterized by increased emotional arousal that stimulates the speaker's resources. The speaker’s state before a public performance is compared to the pre-start condition in sports. It is demonstrated that a moderate level of anxiety is normal in public speaking and corresponds to a state of optimal combat readiness in sports, marked by the peak mobilization of all bodily functions aimed at achieving success. This state ensures the optimal emotional tone of the speech and enables the speaker to make an effective emotional and psychological impact on the target audience.
The article outlines the factors influencing the speaker’s level of anxiety and the causes of excessive nervousness. Special attention is given to methods and techniques for overcoming fear and anxiety in public speaking. The prevention of fear and anxiety is presented as the speaker’s activity aimed at developing confidence, optimal emotional arousal, energy potential, positive thinking, motivation for public speaking, emotional control, readiness to work with various target audiences, as well as the conscious application of methods and techniques to overcome fear and anxiety during the preparation for a public speech.
The article also explores the state of public loneliness experienced by speakers and offers a formula for successfully preparing for a speech: the speaker’s confidence in themselves + a moderate level of anxiety.
