HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND DEVELOPMENT OF MILITARY TRANSLATION: FROM THE ORIGINS TO MODERN APPROACHES

Abstract

The article is devoted to the historical background, origins and development of military translation. The relevance of the problem stated in the article is due to the fact that military translation is a significant part of the activities of the armed forces of any state, diplomatic and international relations, as it ensures communication between representatives of different states, and is an integral component of information security and coordination in international military operations. And in the context of globalization and the ongoing full-scale war on the territory of Ukraine, military translation is extremely important, and the need for qualified military translators is constantly growing. The purpose of the article is to study the peculiarities of the development of military translation. The basis of the methodological approach in this paper is a comprehensive systematic study based on an effective combination of theoretical research methods. In particular, analysis, synthesis, generalization, abstraction, interpretation, as well as descriptive and comparative-historical methods and the method of comparison were used to study the specifics of the development of military translation and to present the results of the study. The main results obtained in this research are a generalization of the concept of “military translation”, a description of the process of development of military translation in Ukraine, and a substantiation of modern approaches to the development of military translation. It is found that military translation began its development since the independence of our country, but since 2014 its development has gained new momentum due to the ongoing military operations on the territory of Ukraine. The results of this research, as well as the conclusions drawn on their basis, are of practical value for military and civilian translators, philologists, teachers, and other professionals involved in the study of the development and functioning of military translation under martial law.
