The article is devoted to the question of the formation of knowledge in the physical culture of students of higher education during their studies at a higher education institution. It was determined that currently, the leading task of higher education in Ukraine is to provide higher education students with knowledge, skills and physical education skills as the basis of their health care. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the theoretical foundations of the formation of literacy in the physical culture of students of higher education in institutions of higher education. It was determined that the concept of literacy in the physical culture of students of higher education is a combination of physical development, state of health and psyche, and physical culture as a component of the cultural development of the individual. It was found that the personal level of literacy in physical culture is determined by the formation of the need-motivation sphere of higher education students. The latter is focused on systematic classes in physical education, the need to master the knowledge and skills of higher education students in this field of knowledge, physical perfection, and the level of physical activity during free time from studying. It has been established that the process of acquiring literacy in physical education by students of higher education will be effective if: systematize the available positive experience and substantiate the possibility of its use at present; highlight the main trends in the development of physical education in modern conditions, taking into account the consequences of the pandemic period and the state of war; predict ways of further improvement, taking into account the permanence of the situation and the influence of negative factors of objective reality. It was determined that the main task of acquiring physical education literacy by students of higher education is to rebuild their consciousness regarding the use of the potential of physical education for their health. It has been investigated that the formation of a complex of necessary theoretical knowledge, which ensures literacy in physical culture, consists of the realization of defined goals and the achievement of the results of physical education classes in the process of studying at a higher education institution.
