The article notes that global changes in how the digital generation perceives information, the crisis of reading activity, and the cognitive deficit currently observed among Ukrainian school students as a result of the war’s deprivation, necessitate the search for effective tools to develop students’ reading competence. It is hypothesized that one such tool may be the use of comics and graphic novels in teaching world literature at the lower and upper secondary school levels. It has been established that comics and graphic novels constitute a synthetic form of art that combines features of literature, cinema, and visual art. It is found that the characteristics of these works - such as vivid visual imagery, emotionality, concreteness, informativeness, dynamism, the combination of verbal and visual means, and communicativeness - determine their significant educational potential. It is determined that, within the context of school literary education, comics and graphic novels perform popularizing, motivational, cognitive, compensatory, communicative, emotional, interpretative, therapeutic, developmental, and educational functions. Artistic-aesthetic and psychological-pedagogical criteria for selecting comics and graphic novels for teaching world literature in schools are identified. The author proposes a classification of comics and graphic novels for the school teaching of world literature, including: publications about reading and readers; graphic novels about writers; comics and graphic novels that illustrate the cultural and historical context of an era; graphic adaptations of literary works; and educational comics. Examples of comics and graphic novels recommended for classroom use, extracurricular activities in world literature, and independent student reading are provided. Priority methodological techniques and types of work with the studied works in the teaching of world literature at school are outlined.
