The article examines the problem of the peculiarities of adolescents with intellectual disabilities' perceptions of the family. It has been found that the perceptions of adolescents with intellectual disabilities about the family may be different, but some common features may include The need for support - most adolescents in this category understand that they need additional support and care, especially compared to their peers with normal development. They may feel dependent on their parents or other family members. A desire to belong: These adolescents may seek understanding, acceptance, and affection from parents and family members. Specific perceptions of roles: Adolescents with intellectual disabilities may have a limited understanding of family roles or deficiencies in their perception and definition. They may have ideas that differ from typical stereotypes. Emotional vulnerability: Adolescents with intellectual disabilities may be more emotionally vulnerable due to difficulties in understanding and expressing their feelings. They may experience increased anxiety or stress. The need for learning and development: Many adolescents with intellectual disabilities may have a desire to learn and develop, but this may require additional effort and an approach specific to their needs.
Understanding the role of the family for adolescents with intellectual disabilities can be challenging, but it is a very important aspect of their development and self-identification. As these adolescents may have limitations in understanding or expressing social and emotional aspects, their perception of the role of the family may differ from what we see in normative adolescents.
Understanding roles in the family includes their understanding and perception of how each family member has a function, responsibility, and contribution to family life. This can be challenging for adolescents with reduced cognitive functioning or limited social skills. They may have a limited understanding of the complexities and nuances of family roles, but may still show some acceptance of these roles.
