ORGANIZATION OF LONG-TERM SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: SOME ASPECTS OF THE EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE

The article presents an attempt to systematically, objectively and deeply highlight the activity of the «Makarenko-abstract» laboratory at the Research Institute of Comparative Pedagogy of the University of Marburg (Germany) as a European example of the organization of long-term scientific research. The prerequisites for the creation, purpose and tasks of the laboratory are revealed, its publication and publishing activity is described. The contribution of the head of the laboratory, Dr. Götz Hillig, to the development of West German Makarenko studies is shown. It was concluded that the extremely effective project of the laboratory «Makarenko-abstract» demonstrates a certain standard of scientific activity, with such indicators as the thoroughness and scale of scientific studies, an unprecedentedly wide search and thorough analysis of primary sources, maximum objectivity in the evaluation of empirical material, pluralism of theoretical assessments of the studied phenomena, great scientific productivity and high publication activity of scientists, broad cooperation in the international context, focus on dialogue and debate in the presentation of scientific results, high academic culture. In addition, 35 years of continuous research on Makarenko by German scientists proved the significance of A. Makarenko's legacy not only for world pedagogy, but also for the humanitarian culture of mankind. The indisputable contribution of the «Makarenko-abstract» laboratory and its head, G. Hillig, to establishing a scientific dialogue between scientists of the East and the West is the involvement in the creation of the International Makarenko Association. Despite the fact that the activities of the Marburg laboratory during the Cold War cannot be recognized as completely politically neutral, it was able to create a stylistically coherent precedent, to demonstrate a kind of «master class» – not only for Soviet, but also for modern historians of pedagogy.
