The study aimed to characterize selected indicators of health-preserving competence among higher education students, identify problematic components, and describe gender-related trends. In May 2026, an anonymous survey was conducted among 392 students of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, and Andrei Krupynskyi Lviv Medical Academy. There were 202 women and 190 men among the respondents. All respondents provided voluntary informed consent. An author-designed questionnaire containing 12 closed-ended items was used. The items covered cognitive, value-motivational, behavioral, and physical activity components. Responses were assessed on a five-point scale, and the results were summarized using descriptive statistics separately for men and women. In both groups, average ratings predominated for knowledge of health determinants and principles of safe physical activity. According to descriptive percentage indicators, women more often selected high and sufficient ratings for health prioritization, motivation, and personal responsibility: 59%, 52%, and 64%, respectively, compared with 20%, 17%, and 23% among men. Women also reported higher indicators of adherence to sleep and rest routines, dietary organization, and constructive coping with psycho-emotional tension. At the same time, high and sufficient levels of regular physical activity were recorded in 48% of men and 22% of women, whereas women more frequently reported active breaks, planning, and self-monitoring. The findings indicate uneven development of individual competence components but do not establish the statistical significance of gender differences. The practical significance of the study lies in substantiating the need to update the content of physical education, strengthen instruction in the safe regulation of exercise intensity and volume, and in self-monitoring, and implement systematic health-promotion and educational activities.
